Raised in a Navy family, provided many opportunities for Bunky to travel as he was growing up. He graduated from the University of Berkeley with a degree in English Literature, lived as a writer in Paris for a year, spent a summer doing commercial salmon fishing in Alaska, and eventually moved to Wai’anae, Hawai’i in 1971. Bunky has worked for many years as a copy editor for the Honolulu Advertiser and as a reporter covering the Wai’anae Coast. During this time, he also started a pottery business and has been teaching pottery for Wai’anae Coast Culture and Arts. An avid surfer, he has supported numerous community events including surf contests, most notably providing public announcements, soliciting donations and prizes, and emceeing the Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic.
